Internships

Internships

Student Personnel Administration Program students are required to complete 300 hours of internship in an area of higher education.

The professional training of the student personnel worker depends heavily on internships which provide practical experience in applying theories learned in the classroom. The Student Personnel internship program is the vehicle for diversified professional training. It encompasses direct service to others, research, planning and organizing, developing a sense of priorities, and understanding and applying the principles of student personnel administration.

The Student Personnel internship program helps develop leadership by meeting students' self-education needs, inspiring self-confidence, self-reliance, enlarging horizons of experience and knowledge in dealing with students, and encouraging a sense of responsibility.

The internship instructor must approve of any internship experience and should be consulted with any ideas you may have about selecting an internship. When selecting an internship and interviewing with a potential supervisor, you should consider whether the experience is going to suit your current needs and future professional goals. The majority of internship supervisors are open to new or individualized ideas, which will enable you to make your internship experience more fulfilling.

The internship is an essential part of the development of a Student Personnel Professional. Internships continue to be evaluated and updated to meet the challenges of changing trends in higher education.
