Five Year Departmental Self-Study Complete (4/21/2010). BSC Physics’ 2010 Self-Study project culminated with a visit by Ruth Howes and Kiko Galvez April 5 and 6, 2010. Dr. Howes is professor emerita of Physics at Ball State University and former president of AAPT. Dr. Galvez is a professor of Physics at Colgate University. During their visit, Ruth and Kiko met extensively with faculty, staff and students. Drs. Howes and Galvez have delivered their report and it is now up to BSC Physics to consider their findings and act on their recommendations. Stay tuned!
Departmental awards banquet held (4/10/2010). The department's annual awards banquet was held at Pearl Street Brewery April 10, 2010. Stephen Clement and Melissa Chudyk were inducted into the Sigma Pi Sigma, a national physics honor society. The usual annual student awards were supplemented this year by one-time gifts from Gerri Lysarz-Fiorella and Ed Gleason (thanks!). Science Building Renovation begins! (4/2010) Disruption from the planned renovation began in earnest with pile driving for the new wing earlier this month.
Dr. MacIsaac on sabbatical for AY2010 (12/2009). Dan MacIsaac announces that he will be on sabbatical for AY2010. He will spend Fall 2010 in Finland and Spring 2011 at Rutgers University.Dr. Demarco wins BSC President's Award for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity (2009).
Dr. Ram Rai joins BSC Physics faculty (8/2008). Dr. Rai is an experimental condensed matter physicists. He has taught at University of Kentucky and the University of Katmandu.
Dr. Luanna Gomez joins BSC Physics faculty (8/2008). Dr. Gomez has a background in physics education research and has taught at Arizona State University.

BSC interviews for new professor in physics education research. The department will host interviews for Nick Cabot and Luanna Gomez. Each will give two talks open to the BSC physics cummunity: a research talk and a sample class.
Nick Cabot will give a research talk 12:15-1:15pm in SCI272 on Tuesday 3/27. Nick's sample class will be 3:45-4:15pm in SCI205.
Luanna Gomez will visit the second week of April.

BSC interviews for new professor in condensed matter physics. The department hosted interviews for Pei-Chun Ho, Yang Li and Ram Rai. In addition to meeting with faculty, ea ch candidate gave a public talk on their research and a sample class.

Physics Profs Receive $360K Energy Grant. The United States Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences, funded a grant proposal by Michael DeMarco and Dermot Coffey for $360,000. This work will contiune their studies of the magnetic properties of ruthenates funded by the USDOE from 2003-2006. The first grant was for $275,000.
