Items whose owners can be identified are less likely to be stolen. Operation Identification is a program in which engraving pens mark (etch) your identification number on your valuables to discourage theft and to increase the likelihood of recovering any stolen items.
The University Police Department offers the use of engraving pens to college community members through the National Operation ID Program. Contact the University Police at (716) 878-6333 to arrange a time for marking your valuables.
The best way to prevent theft is to:
- lock your doors
- know your visitors
- keep valuables out of sight
- do not leave items unattended in public places
