Preventing Fires
Preventing Fire-Related Crimes
In Case of Fire Drill

The University Police Department has personnel on 24-hour duty to respond to any emergency, including fires. When a fire alarm goes, the Buffalo Fire Department is also sent to the scene. Buffalo State University Police work with the Environmental Health and Safety Office, Campus Services, and the Buffalo Fire Department to meet these goals:

  • prevent fires
  • detect and extinguish fires
  • investigate the cause of fires
  • educate students, faculty, and staff regarding fire hazards and prevention
  • maintain and improve fire-fighting equipment and procedures

The University Police present fire prevention and response seminars to students, faculty, and staff. Call 878-6333 to request a presentation.

In Case of Fire Drill

When the alarm sounds:

  1. ALWAYS leave the building immediately. NEVER assume the alarm is a false alarm.
  2. Continue to evacuate the building even if the alarm stops.
  3. Use the nearest exit. If the nearest exit is blocked by fire, heat or smoke, go to another exit.
  4. ALWAYS use the stairs. Stairway fire doors will keep out fire and smoke if they are closed and will protect you until you get outside. NEVER use an elevator. If the power fails, you will be trapped.
  5. DO NOT go back into the building until a university police officer or the Buffalo Fire Chief indicates that it is safe to do.
