Buffalo State offers 60 graduate programs—36 master's programs, two certificate of advanced study programs, four graduate certificate programs, and 18 postbaccalaureate teacher certification programs.

Academic departments belong to one of four academic schools: the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Education, the School of Natural and Social Sciences, and the School of the Professions. Within these departments, graduate students have a number of cutting edge programs from which to choose. Buffalo State offers 23 areas of specialization in the master's of science in education—more choices in graduate education study than any other SUNY school. Specialized graduate degree programs include art conservation, creative studies, educational computing, and teaching bilingual exceptional individuals as well as a master of professional studies degree in literacy (reading teacher).
