Summer Work Projects

During the summer months following the first and second years of training, students are strongly encouraged to find employment in conservation. The department serves as a clearinghouse for summer employment opportunities, bringing these to the attention of students. Students have been very successful in arranging their own summer positions to match their particular conservation interests and training needs. Faculty are also available to assist students with suggestions and contacts in the field. Below are examples of summer projects our students particpated in this year.

Nathan Sutton at Whitten & Proctor
Second year student, Nathan Sutton, applies adhesive to some lifting paint before adding facing and unframing the painting he is treating at Whitten & Proctor Fine Art Conservation. Nathan is working with alumni Jill Whitten ('92) and Robert Proctor ('92) this summer at their private practice in Houston, Texas.

Beth Nunan Treats Puppets in Atlanta

Beth Nunan is busy surveying 650 Asian puppets this summer at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia. She is shown here working on an Indian puppet, one of 369 shadow puppets in the collection and she will soon move on to rod, string, and hand puppets in the collection. The Center for Puppetry Arts has over 1,500 puppets in their collection and they are just developing as a museum, working to become accredited with AAM. Beth will be spending her summer at the Center before heading to her third year internship at the American Museum of Natural History in New York this fall.

Eileen Sullivan at the Shelburne Museum
